Let me paint the scene: it’s 8:45 PM. My work laptop is finally shut, dinner dishes are still in the sink, and I have maybe 90 quiet minutes to myself before I crash into bed. Most people would wind down with Netflix. I open Trello and Showit.
To start a business while working full time has been one of the most rewarding (and challenging) things I’ve ever done. It’s messy, imperfect, and often fueled by iced coffee and late-night bursts of inspiration. But if you’re in the same boat — dreaming of something more, building something on the side — I want you to know this: it’s possible. You’re not behind. And you don’t need to wait until you “have more time.”
Here’s what I’ve learned about growing a brand and how to start a business while working full time.
One of the biggest lies we’re told is that you need to quit your job and go all-in on your business from day one. Honestly? Starting slow is underrated. I used to feel guilty that I wasn’t dedicating more time to my brand, but now I see how growing gradually helped me figure out what I actually wanted to build.
You don’t need a perfect 10-step plan to begin. You just need to start — in the margins of your day, one project at a time.
If there’s one thing full-time work teaches you, it’s how to protect your energy. I learned quickly that not every free evening is a “work on the business” night. Some days are for creating, and some days are for rest. (And sometimes you’ll start working and just end up scrolling Pinterest for an hour — and that’s okay too.)
Your brand will benefit more from consistent, focused energy than from burning the candle at both ends.
As someone who loves creative flow, I resisted routines for a long time. But I’ve come to appreciate that structure — even just a few dedicated time blocks a week — makes everything feel more doable. Whether it’s Saturday mornings for design work or one evening a week for content creation, even a loose rhythm helps you stay grounded and avoid the “I’ll do it when I have time” spiral.
When I first started, I wanted the perfect brand, the perfect website, the dream Instagram feed, a newsletter, digital offers, all of it. Spoiler: trying to do it all is the fastest path to burnout.
Now I focus on building one intentional piece at a time. Your brand doesn’t have to launch in one magical moment — it’s allowed to grow with you. Prioritize what moves the needle (hint: usually that means creating your offer, connecting with people, and showing up online as you).
This part surprised me: as I grew my brand, I started to feel like two different people. “Work Me” in meetings and “Business Me” behind the scenes. There was imposter syndrome, self-doubt, and a weird fear of being seen in this new way.
But here’s what helped: embracing the transition. Letting both versions of me exist. And eventually, allowing them to merge. You don’t need to have it all figured out before calling yourself a business owner. You already are one.
In the early days, it’s easy to think no one’s paying attention. But I promise: someone is watching, listening, learning from you. Every story you share, every piece of your brand you bring to life — it adds up. You’re planting seeds. And one day soon, people will find you and say, “I’ve been following your journey for a while.”
That’s the power of showing up before you feel “ready.”
Final Thoughts:
If you’re building something meaningful after hours, in between work calls and weekend errands — I see you. It takes courage to pour energy into your dreams when no one’s clapping yet. But keep going. You’re building a life that reflects who you really are.
And one day, you’ll look back and be so proud you didn’t wait for the perfect moment.
If you’re ready to give your side business the visual presence it deserves, I’d love to help. I design intentional brand identities and Showit websites for creatives and entrepreneurs like you — people who are building something powerful in the in-between moments.
